A New Dawn

Casting our ballots
With determination and conviction
Hope and tiredness
Worn by the present atrocities
But strengthened by
A glimpse of a better tomorrow

A new constitution
Better than the former
Thanks to democracy
Majority won
Smiles and chants of happiness
Rent the country
A few disappointed but grateful for
A rebirth of the nation.

On a chilly morning
With light showers of rain
A sign of the nations’ cleansing
Cleaning of the shed blood;
History is made
Before a mass of people
Constitution is promulgated

By a stroke of the pen
Freedom is felt
Tears of joy streamed down Kenyan’s faces
We smiled with renewed hope
Atrocities spoken of
As a yesterday’s predicament

We reach for freedom
Blood bonds
Happiness; peace
As we bid farewell to
Tribal inclinations
Dictatorship
And blood shed

We usher in a new Kenya
With screams of laughter
It is a NEW DAWN for us
Finally
Am proud to be Kenyan

Still a long way to go
But
We are certainly getting there….
